
Baaba Maal is a music superstar and UNCCD Ambassador from Senegal (comparable to artists like Youssou N’Dour and Angelique Kidjo). He’s maybe most famous for being the lead feature of Marvel’s Black Panther soundtrack, and for his “genre-fluid” collaborations with bands like Mumford & Sons and Brazilian Girls.
I interviewed him back in 2010 for his “Television” album, during my time at JBTV (video below; audio for Chicago Public Radio above). But I’d seen him live years before that, at the incredible Africa Fete ’95 tour (with Oumou Sangare, Femi Kuti, and Boukman Eksperyans).
